Eccl 3:1 reads "There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven.." In this passage of scripture God speaks to something that often troubles many Christians. Even if we pride ourselves on being open and ready, when this thing comes into our lives we are often not so flexible as we claim to be. What I am referring to may come upon us in a moment or it may slowly develop over a period of time. However it manifests, many of us may find ourselves struggling to adjust when it does come. What is this thing I'm speaking about? It's change! In our own way, we all struggle with the concept and conditions of change.
When it comes to change, one thing is certain, everything but God changes. This is the order He has established for His creation. He is the only thing we can depend on to remain constant, unwavering and sure. We who are a part of His design have to embrace that reality. In Mal 3:6 we read "For I, the LORD, do not change;...". What an awesome truth for us to grab hold of. The fact is, nothing of this earth is worthy to put our trust in. Psalms 46:2 says "...we will not fear, though the earth should change,...". Until we really understand this truth our heart will remain divided about God and daily circumstance will have the power to influence how we feel and destroy what we believe.
The uncertainty of everything around us is nothing more than a reminder of just how unstable this world is. If we don't keep our focus on God it could be more than we are able to bear. Gas prices continue to rise from day to day. Food prices are going through the roof. Insurance, heat bills, light bills and everything else seems to be in constant flux as they cost more and more. Wild fires ravage the countryside, unexplained weather conditions are in the news and there seems to be no end in sight for these continual changes.
I'm reminded of the lyrics from an old secular song that expressed what so many now feel. In part the words are "how can I be sure, in a world that's constantly changing, how can I be sure..?". Amazingly enough the Psalmist had an answer to this questions. In Psalms 37:3-5 he gives us a fresh perspective through a wonderful revelation about God. Here we read, "Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness. Delight yourself in the LORD; and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD, trust also in Him, and He will do it."
David's revelation was so simple yet profound. He knew it was only his relationship with God that made the difference. No matter who was in power or what was happening he had the "one thing" he knew he could depend on.... it was God. With his trust firmly fixed on the One who is faithful he could be faithful himself. To put it another way, when your soul is anchored to The Immovable Rock you become immovable as well. 1 John 4:17 puts it this way; "By this, love is perfected with us, that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world." Did you get that??? As He is so also are we.... what an incredible promise!
Knowing this we can agree with Psalms 46:1-5 where it says, "God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, And though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; Though its waters roar and foam, Though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. Selah. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, The holy dwelling places of the Most High. God is in the midst of her, she will not be moved." When your foundation is rooted and grounded in the unchanging, unwavering nature of the God of the Bible life takes on a new perspective. All around us can shift and move but we will not be shaken!
